The Young Orchestra of the Generalitat Valenciana was created in May of 1998 under the Valencian Music Law, and is part of the Music Division of Culturarts. This orchestra continues the initiative started by the Young Orchestra of the Valencian Community, which was created in 1991. Its main goal is to contribute to the training of young musicians under 26 through seminars and workshops led by prominent teachers.
In addition to its director Manuel Galduf, the orchestra has an student intern assistant director, José Vicente Leal Mora, and, since 2001, it also has a resident composer, a position which has been filled by César Cano, Ricardo Climent, Andrés Valero-Castells, Miguel Gálvez-Taroncher, Voro García, Francisco Coll, Óscar Navarro, and currently by Carlos Fontcuberta.
The Young Orchestra of the Generalitat Valenciana has participated in events held in various cities of the region, including Alicante, Altea, Burriana, Carcaixent, Castellón, Cullera, La Vila-Joiosa, Llíria, Rafelbunyol, Requena, Sant Vicent del Raspeig, Segorbe, Torrevieja, Xàtiva and Valencia. It has worked with maestros such as José L. García Asensio, Félix Ayo, Mihai Dancila, Alfonso Ghedin, Agustín León Ara, Ara Malikian, Franco Petracchi, Mstislav Rostropovich, Irvine Arditti, Joan Enric Lluna, Vicens Prats, and Klaus Thunemann, and with the ensembles Cuarteto Canales, Cuarteto Quiroga, Quintet Cuesta, Spanish Brass-Luur Metalls, and Amores Grup de Percussió.
In 2002 it participated in the world premiere of Vladimir Vasiliev's version of Romeo and Juliet, by Sergei Prokofiev, which was conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich and performed in Valencia's Teatro Principal. It has accompanied soloists such as Rostropovich, Vadim Repin, Otto Sauter, Irvine Arditti, Ara Malikian, Josep Puchades, José Franch Ballester, Nicolas Hodges, Itxaro Mentxaka, Isabel Monar, Erika Escribá-Astaburuaga, Silvia Vázquez, Marina Rodriguez-Cusí, María Bazal, José Antonio López, and Alberto Guardiola.
It has played two concerts in the Teatro Monumental of Madrid, both of which were broadcasted by the RTVE, the Spanish public television. It has also given performances at the International Music Festival of Galicia (2003), at FEX (International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada, 2007), at the Music Festival of Alicante (2008 and 2010), and at the Festival Sagunt a Escena (2012), where it appeared with the Choir of the Generalitat Valenciana. This collaboration was done again, also with the Ballet of the Generalitat (2013) for the production of the ballet The Firebird, by I. Stravinsky, and Bolero by M. Ravel (2015)
Its repertoire features current music and works by Valencian composers, which have been the focus of its recordings.
