carlos-fontucubertawebCarlos Fontcuberta was born in Valencia in 1977. He studied piano with Bartomeu Jaume, and harmony with J. J. Poveda. He then studied composition with Ramón Ramos in the Music Conservatory of Valencia, where he also had classes with E. Sanz, G. Jiménez, C. Cano, F. Tamarit, E. Calandín, etc. He furthered his training with composition courses taught by Mauricio Sotelo, José Manuel López López, César Camarero, Jesús Rueda, Óscar Strasnoy, Phillippe Hurel, Unsuk Chin, Leonardo Balada, José Mª Sánchez-Verdú, Alberto Posadas, etc. In 2008 he was awarded a scholarship by the Cadiz Manuel de Falla Chair. In 2009 he participated as an active student in the Permanent Composition Seminar of Grup Instrumental de Valencia, taught by Mauricio Sotelo, and in 2011 he participated in the Acanthes courses in Metz (France).
He has been a guest researcher at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique to prepare his doctoral thesis, and in this institution he was also a composition student with Gérard Pesson. Finally, at the Paris 8 university he studied computer-assisted composition under José Manuel López López.
He received the Xavier Montsalvatge First Prize at the 22nd Young Composers Awards given by Fundación Autor-CNDM, and the 2011 Plural Ensemble Prize for young composers. His work has been performed by Grup Instrumental de València, Ensemble Espai Sonor, Ensemble d'Arts, Smash Ensemble, Plural Ensemble, Orchestre Nationale de Lorraine, Ensemble Orchestrutopica, etc.. His compositions have been presented in concert halls such as Valencia's Palau de la Música, Auditorio 400 in Madrid's Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Auditori de Barcelona, Fundación BBVA in Bilbao, Auditorio de Zaragoza, Metz Arsenal, and in festivals such as Ensems, Festival de Música Contemporánea de Alicante, Festival Acanthes and Festival Gare du Nord (Basel).
The commissions he has received include the composition of one of the mandatory pieces for the 15th José Iturbi International Piano Competition, a composition for the Choir of the Generalitat Valenciana to commemorate its 25th anniversary, and a Radio France commission for the radio show France Musique Alla Breve.
In addition to his work as a composer, since 2006 he has also been teaching counterpoint and analysis at the conservatories of Valencia and Castellón.
